Cell Phone Dangers

A study by neurosurgeon Dr. Vini Khurana, an award-winning cancer expert, says that cell phone use over a decade can double the risk of brain cancer. Dr. Khurana says that malignant brain tumors represent "a life-ending diagnosis… We are currently experiencing a reactively unchecked and dangerous situation." He fears that "unless the industry and governments take immediate and decisive steps,” the incidence and death rate from malignant brain tumors will be a global problem in a decade, at which time it may be too late to medically intervene.

A separate 2-year study conducted by the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority in Finland has shown that cell phone use causes permanent changes in the brain, negatively affecting health. Researchers found that exposing human cells to one hour of cell phone radiation triggered a response that normally only occurs when cells are being damaged. The report warns that "the possible RF-EMF (radiation-induced breakage of the blood-brain barrier), if occurring repeatedly over a long period of time, might become a health hazard because of the possible extra-capillary accumulation of molecules that might cause brain tissue damage."

Think you are safe using your hands-free earpiece? Think again. “Research conducted by British consumer research magazine Which? indicates that hands-free cell phone kits may significantly INCREASE your brain's exposure to radiation. The findings confirmed claims that that using hands-free earpieces in certain positions could more than TRIPLE your brain's exposure to radiation compared to a conventional cell phone call.” (Dr. Mercola)

The method by which exposure to radiation occurs is explained by Dr. Mercola:

"In essence, your cell phone is a radio. When you talk on your cell phone, your voice is transmitted from the antenna as radio frequency radiation (RFR) between 800 MHz and 1,990 MHz. This frequency falls in the range of microwave radiation and, when you are exposed to it, there may be a chance of health consequences.

Depending on how close the cell phone antenna is to your head, between 20% and 60% of the radiation emitted by your cell phone is transferred into your head. The radiation actually penetrates the area around your head and is absorbed, with some radiation reaching an inch, to an inch and a half, into your brain.

Cell phones are designed to transmit radio waves in all directions because base stations can be located in any direction with respect to phone users. This means that portions of the radio waves they produce are directed towards your body." http://www.mercola.com/forms/ferrite_beads.htm

There are many sites out there that advertise beads and stickers, which they claim offset the radiation from your cell phone. But the only foolproof way to limit your exposure is to limit your use. If possible, use earbuds or a headset that plugs directly into your cell phone, and keep the phone off your body whenever you can. Keep cell phones away from kids as long as possible (some say until development is complete in the 20’s. But we know that it would be nearly impossible to keep a cell phone away from a teenager), and when they do have phones, try to limit their use and encourage them to use a plug-in headset. And don’t let your developing baby play with your cell phone when it is on.

So, how does one change the current tide of cell phones being the only phone they have? What are our options? Ear buds are fine, but they are actually becoming harder to find, as everyone goes to the Bluetooth Hands Free systems....
