Ketchup (or “catsup”). Its presence at barbeques and restaurants all over is as ubiquitous as sand at the beach. And it’s from tomatoes- what a great way to get your kids to eat veggies! Wrong. Most ketchup is made with High Fructose Corn Syrup, whose health detriments are well-known. Not to mention that the HFCS and corn syrup in traditional ketchup (and the tomatoes themselves) are most likely genetically modified, which are usually pesticide-ridden, are terrible for the environment, and contain genetic material that can bond to receptors in the body, causing health problems, such as heart disease and cancer. It also contains “natural flavoring,” which sounds healthy, but in reality can be heavily-processed, GMO-laden chemicals. Even most Organic ketchups have refined sugar in them.
Still sound like a great way to get your kids to eat their veggies? Didn't think so. The best way to monitor what you are consuming is to make it yourself. That includes ketchup! Here is an easy, delicious recipe. • 1 cup organic tomato paste (or make your own) • 1 tbsp. organic, raw local honey (or maple syrup) • 1/4 tsp. organic mustard • 1 tsp. organic onion powder • 1 tsp. organic garlic powder • 1 tbsp. organic apple cider vinegar (use more for more “bite”) • 1/2 tsp. sea salt • 1/4 cup water • Optional: 1 teaspoon powdered chia seeds (natural thickener) Blend all ingredients well in food processor. Refrigerate at least a few hours before serving. If you want it to be more or less sweet, add more or less honey or maple syrup to taste. The best part of this recipe is that you can easily add more or less of anything, depending on your taste.
